Who we are
Tara
Community Care
Anne is a single mother of four from a newly arrived
African refugee community. Her 13-year-old son, Mat has ASD and significant communication challenges. In 2019, Mat received NDIS funding with the goal of improving his emotional regulation and social interactions. However, without support coordination and due to Anne's limited English and understanding of the plan,
the intended outcomes were never realised. Despite initial allied health assessments, the support stopped after a few sessions, and the funding rolled over year after year with no real impact on Mat or his family.Anne and Mat's story is not unique. Many families face similar barriers, leaving them overwhelmed, frustrated, and
unable to access the support they need.
Our journey began after hearing countless stories,
like Anne's. Tara Community Care was established to address these gaps and create pathways to better outcomes.
Tara Advocacy Services was founded by a group of passionate community leaders, professionals, and allies from the broader community, organisations, and professional networks. Frustrated by the challenges faced by families navigating complex systems
like the NDIS, we came together to drive meaningful change at personal, structural, and advocacy levels.
Strengthening communities, bridging gaps and enabling change
Our Mission
At Tara Community Care, we are committed to strengthening individuals, families, and communities to navigate systems, advocate for change, and demonstrate approaches that make meaningful change.
Our Values
-
Inclusive: We ensure that no one is left behind, embracing diversity and building connections.
-
Strength-Based: We focus on the resilience and potential of individuals, families, and communities.
-
Community-Centred & Community-Led: We believe in approaches that are rooted in the voices and strengths of the community.

Our Approach
We focus on three key areas to create impact:
-
Advocating for Change
We work to help systems understand not only the challenges and gaps but also the opportunities to improve outcomes for families from newly arrived and refugee communities. -
Demonstrating Change
We implement community-centred pilot projects and case studies that showcase practical approaches and highlight what works on the ground. -
Supporting Individuals and Families
We provide hands-on support to help individuals and families navigate complex systems like the NDIS, ensuring they can access the services and opportunities they deserve.
