Barriers and challenges: Support needs for CALD families with children with autism.

Updated: Jan 8

Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) families raising children with autism often face unique and compounded struggles due to cultural, social, and systemic barriers. Navigating the complexities of autism can be overwhelming, particularly for parents who may lack familiarity with the healthcare and education systems in their host country. Language barriers can hinder their ability to access vital diagnostic services, therapies, and support networks, leaving many families feeling isolated. Cultural stigma surrounding disabilities, including autism, may exacerbate feelings of shame and discourage families from seeking help.

Financial stress is another significant challenge, as many CALD families lack the resources to afford specialized care or may encounter employment challenges due to caregiving demands. Furthermore, systemic discrimination and the lack of culturally sensitive services often result in these families receiving inadequate or inappropriate support. Despite these struggles, many CALD families display remarkable resilience, drawing on their cultural strengths, community connections, and determination to provide the best care for their children. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort to develop inclusive, culturally responsive services tailored to their needs.
